The loss of Poppy ripples through the pride. With only one cub and none of the Mwamba females pregnant, the males abandon their family to find new females across the Luangwa River. The loss of the males causes Milo's relationship with his mother and the rest of the pride to begin to weaken. Episode 1 - Kimba's Rise

41min

The Mwamba lion pride dominates the west bank of the river in Zambia's Luangwa Valley. But this family is facing an uncertain future. The pride's dominant males, the fearsome Punks, are roaming away in neighbouring territories, with an eye to taking over other prides. So all the hunting falls to the pride females - nine strong lionesses who try to bring down antelope every day. But with six growing teenagers with bottomless appetites, and more than half of attempted hunts ending in failure, food is scarce. Two of the teenagers are the best of friends. Confident, impulsive Maya is the baby of the family but she's always been adventurous, even reckless. Her older brother Kimba is more reticent. He hangs back from the action but is sometimes lead into dangerous scrapes by his beloved little sister. These youngsters face a rite of passage that will make or break them. They must go up against some of Africa's most dangerous adversaries on their journey to adulthood. Lions are born with an innate set of hunting skills. But unless they perfect these now, they won't survive this fiercely competitive world. If Kimba and Maya are to have enough food, they must learn to hunt. And when Kimba's mother is fatally wounded in a fight with the local hyena clan, the pride loses their most experienced hunter. The pride and its yearlings are in even deeper trouble and it's up to Kimba and Maya to step up and play their part. Brave Kimba puts his nervousness aside and leads the assault on a buffalo. And for once Maya's recklessness is an asset as she distracts the bull, keeping its dangerous horns away from the rest of the pride, who finally bring down the meal they so desperately need. The youngsters come up against fierce rivals and stare death in the face. But at last they prove they have what it takes to secure the future of their pride.
