Mountain man Marty Raney, his son Matt and dog musher Brent Sass decide to enter the Talachulitna River farther downstream from the rest of the crew. But even the shortened river route can't guarantee a safe trip, and it's not long before disaster strikes. Marty's raft flips, and he finds himself submerged in ice cold water. Facing the severe threat of hypothermia, the team must stop to get Marty warm, even if it means missing their flight out.

To travel this great distance, the men split up into two teams and build two competing man-made rafts that will allow them to navigate the strong waters of the Yukon and punch through a treacherous stretch of rapids to reach the extraction-landing zone. Mountain man Marty Raney takes charge of a five-man crew consisting of Willi, Brent, Tyler and his son Matt. They fashion a colossal raft weighing in at nearly 2 tons, hopefully sturdy enough to beat the rapids. They are the first to launch but also the first to face hunger. While Marty and crew will rely on rudimentary gear and innovative techniques to feed, the banks of the mighty Yukon unfold a nice local surprise for the hungry explorers before they attempt to cross its rocky rapids. Meanwhile, Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey, his brother Tyrell and survival expert Austin Manelick make up the second crew. Dallas takes his time to meticulously engineer a smaller raft that's speedy and maneuverable. After the trio finally hits the river, they quickly make progress. Dallas, Tyrell and Austin fight to keep their raft from being destroyed by a submerged sandbar and then the struggle to stay afloat in the unforgiving rapids. Facing the brink of collapse, the men set out with one mission: harvest as much food as possible from the barren landscape. To make the most of their time on Nunivak, the men split up into three hunting parties. Bow hunter Austin Manelick leads veteran mountaineers Willi Prittie and Tyler Johnson to the cliffs of the Bering Sea. Austin hopes to prove himself to the others by shooting a coastal bird. But this will be no easy task with only a primitive bow and arrow at his side. Mountain man Marty Raney and his son Matt venture far inland looking for fish-filled lakes and streams. But will the reward be worth the risk of traveling so far away from the group and the extraction LZ? Brothers Dallas and Tyrell Seavey team up with dog musher Brent Sass. With water above and below, the risk of hypothermia is greater than ever. Veteran climber Willi Prittie takes command of the 5-person umiak (native canoe). With Austin, Brent, Dallas and Tyrell at his side, Willi instructs his crew to take the most direct route to the extraction LZ: straight down the middle of the Sound. But calving glaciers create massive waves that threaten to capsize their vessel at any moment. Mountain man Marty Raney, his son Matt, and the ever-fearless Tyler Johnson board the bedorkas baidarkas (native kayaks). Given the small size of their boats, they decide to stay close to the shoreline. But when the fog rolls in and the tide rolls out, Marty's worst fear is realized: Matt goes missing. Marty and Tyler are faced with a devastating choice: Do they stay and look for Matt, or head for the extraction LZ where he could be waiting? With only 72 hours to complete the journey, they risk being left behind in the middle of untamed Alaskan wilderness.
